by Taylor Behlmer

StateRAMP is built on collaboration and a shared commitment to improving cybersecurity. Each committee plays a vital role in this mission, and the Steering Committee is no exception. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Rich Banta, a founding member of StateRAMP and a dedicated advocate for cybersecurity and fairness in the assessment process.

How long have you been involved with StateRAMP?

I’ve been involved from the very beginning of StateRAMP. From its inception, I’ve had the privilege of watching the organization grow from an ambitious idea into a thriving community that’s transforming how states and providers approach cybersecurity. It’s been an incredible journey to witness the impact we’ve made and the foundation we’re building for the future.

What motivated you to join your respective committee?

Having worked closely with the FedRAMP Project Management Office (PMO) over the years, I recognized an opportunity to shape a process that balances fairness and accountability for StateRAMP providers. I’m motivated by the chance to improve cybersecurity standards while fostering trust and transparency in every step of the process.

What skills and experience do you bring to your committee?

With over 22 years of experience as the owner of an MSP/CSP and 14 years of audit expertise, I bring a comprehensive understanding of the challenges providers face. My firsthand experience with FedRAMP processes equips me to offer valuable insights and advocate for solutions that benefit both providers and the broader StateRAMP community.

What advice would you share with someone interested in joining a committee with StateRAMP?

Don’t hesitate—jump in! Serving on a StateRAMP committee is a unique opportunity to collaborate with some of the brightest and most dedicated professionals in the field. It’s a chance to learn, grow, and contribute directly to a mission that’s shaping the future of cybersecurity.

What has been the most memorable or rewarding moment you have experienced working with the committee so far?

One of the most rewarding aspects has been the humility and collaborative spirit of my fellow committee members. Despite their impressive credentials, everyone approaches the work with respect, openness, and a shared commitment to our mission. It’s truly inspiring and a reminder of what makes StateRAMP so special.
